Expect company, not an empty museum
The late opening is open to everyone. Travellers who booked expecting the galleries to themselves were disappointed; those who expected fewer people than at midday were not.
Find the guide before the start
The commonest problem is the meeting point. At the arch in the Carrousel garden, two travellers spent 15 to 45 minutes finding their guide. Arrive early and look for the sign with your name.
Say what you need at the start
With a private guide you can steer the route. Tell them about stairs, children or the works you care about as soon as you meet, not halfway round.
Bring water
Parts of the museum have no air conditioning, and a summer evening in the upper galleries is warm. A bottle in your bag helps; drink it in the halls, not the rooms.
